PHP

My preferred language is PHP and perhaps that is why I am most proficient at it. I would say that over 90% of the custom web design i do is PHP. A couple of other languages go hand in hand with PHP programming. HTML is the language of the internet. It is the language that you browser understands. MYSQL is the other language that goes hand-in-hand with PHP. MYSQL is a database utility.

Well written PHP/MYSQL sites are easily found and indexed by the major search engines and more importantly are easy to update. They also provide a great deal more usefulness to the end user that the majority of sites that don't use these types of technologies.

MYSQL

MYSQL is an open source database utility. Being open source, it is very widely used, leading to an extensive support community and an abundance of competant programmers. There are folks that write PHP driven sites that don't use MYSQL. Those type of sites are called flat flie driven. They are not very popular any more though

HTML

HTML Is the language that is received by you browser and displayed on your screen. It is probably the most basic of the "web languages". HTML is what determines how the web page is layed out on the screen and in a lot of cases it determines the font size and color and things like images, background colors etc.

CSS

CSS stands for "cascading styel sheets". CSS works closely with the HTML generated and provides a shortcut way to manage the style of individual elements on the page.

A good understanding of CSS is necessary to create and update tasteful websites.
